Why this exists
Visibility isn't the same as authority
Most founders and expert service providers are told to post more, promote harder, or build an audience, before anyone has shown them what that visibility should actually represent.
The result is familiar. Founders who are well known in their space but still get out-negotiated by less capable competitors with sharper positioning.
Service providers with real, hard-won expertise who still rely entirely on referrals, because nobody outside their existing network has any reason to have heard of them.
Being seen doesn't guarantee you're understood. Being understood doesn't guarantee you're trusted. And being trusted once doesn't guarantee your influence will last.
The Four Stages of Brand Authority exists to close that gap, turning the vague ambition of “building authority” into four clear areas you can understand, diagnose and strengthen.
The fastest way to find your gap is to see which stage you're in.
See which stage you're inWhat is brand authority?
The recognition and trust connected to your name
Brand authority is the recognition and trust connected to your name, your work, your ideas or your organisation.
It's what makes people believe in the value of what you offer, and think of you the moment a relevant opportunity arises.
- It is not expertise. You can have deep expertise no one knows about.
- It is not visibility. You can be seen constantly without being trusted.
- It is not popularity. Attention is not the same as credibility.
Real authority forms when three things move together:
Personal brand
What you're individually known for: your perspective, expertise and judgement.
Business brand
The credibility behind you: proof that what you say can be delivered.
Campaign brand
The momentum around you: the launches and moments that create urgency.
These three don't add together. They multiply. Weakness in any one limits what the other two can achieve, no matter how strong they are individually. This is the logic behind the 3B Authority Method™, part of the wider P.H.A.S.E.S.® Brand Authority System.
The methodology
The four stages
A clear order and a repeatable structure that applies to wherever you are right now. Tap a segment below to explore each stage, or scroll through the full detail in the cards underneath.
Stage 01 · Foundations
Fix your foundations
Clarify what you want to be known for.
Foundations must be functional.
01 · Foundations
Fix your foundations
Clarify what you want to be known for.
Every reputation is built on a foundation. The question is whether yours was chosen intentionally or formed by accident. This stage brings clarity before visibility, so your communication, decisions and reputation start moving in the same direction.
“What do I actually want the right people to recognise and trust me for, before anyone else?”
Foundations must be functional.
Confirm what stage you're in by completing the diagnostic02 · Rhythm
Build your rhythm
Become consistently recognisable.
Clarity that's rarely expressed is hard for anyone to recognise. This stage turns your position into a consistent, realistic pattern of communication and contribution, so isolated moments become a connected body of work.
“How will I express and reinforce what I stand for consistently enough to become recognised?”
Rhythm must be reliable.
Confirm what stage you're in by completing the diagnostic03 · Amplify
Amplify your authority
Strengthen credibility, trust and reach.
Being recognised isn't the same as being relied upon. This stage strengthens the connection between what you claim, what you demonstrate and what other people actually experience, through evidence, relationships and recognition beyond your own voice.
“What gives other people a credible reason to trust, reference and recommend my contribution?”
Authority must be validated.
Confirm what stage you're in by completing the diagnostic04 · Sustain
Sustain your influence
Build authority that continues creating value.
Authority built entirely on your constant personal effort is fragile. This stage moves you from continual activity to responsible stewardship, so your influence keeps compounding, even without your permanent presence.
“How can my authority continue creating value without depending entirely on my constant presence and effort?”
Influence must compound.

Which stage is limiting your authority right now?
Not every authority problem needs more content, more reach or a new platform. Sometimes the issue is an unclear foundation. Sometimes it's an inconsistent presence. Sometimes it's a lack of outside validation. Sometimes it's over-reliance on you personally.

How the stages work together
The Four Stages of Brand Authority follow a clear order, but they aren't a ladder you climb once and leave behind.
- 1.Foundations establish what your authority represents.
- 2.Rhythm makes that position recognisable.
- 3.Amplification strengthens its credibility and reach.
- 4.Sustainability lets the resulting influence keep creating value.
Experienced people revisit earlier stages all the time. A recognised founder may still need stronger reasons for people to trust them.
An established service provider may need to reduce how much everything depends on them personally.
Returning to an earlier stage isn't going backwards. It's how the methodology stays useful as you grow.
The structure stays fixed. The application stays flexible.
Who it's for
Built specifically for two kinds of people
Founders
Who are good at building the thing but have never been shown how to build the reputation around it: the kind that gets you funded, referred and remembered before you've had the chance to pitch.
Expert service providers
Consultants, advisors and specialists whose expertise is real but whose authority still depends on someone else's introduction.
Also relevant for independent professionals, leaders, creators and organisations facing the same core problem: what they know is real, but it isn't yet recognised.
You don't need a huge audience. Authority matters just as much inside a workplace, profession or local community. The real question is:
Do the people who matter understand what I contribute, trust its value, and remember me when it becomes relevant?

About the methodology
Developed by Tariq Peters
Tariq Peters is a Brand Authority Strategist, founder of Follow The Phases, and creator of the P.H.A.S.E.S.® Brand Authority System.
Built across a decade of work in brand strategy, personal and business branding, PR, campaigns and authority-led growth, the Four Stages of Brand Authority was created because the idea that a personal brand alone can build you a successful business, or a successful life, has been sold to far too many people.
It makes you more visible, but visibility on its own doesn't give you the credibility to convert into revenue-generating opportunity. Building authority that actually shifts your trajectory takes more than a personal brand working alone.
Four Stages of Brand Authority sits within the wider P.H.A.S.E.S.® Brand Authority System: the complete body of thinking behind Follow The Phases, the Brand Authority Agency.
- The wider system holds the complete body of work
- The four stages explains how authority develops
- The diagnostic identifies where to begin, and unlocks the guide to act on it
- Direct strategic work applies it to specific commercial challenges
